What Is Radon Gas?

Over time, breathing in high levels of radon gas can cause lung cancer.  When you breathe in radon gas, radioactive particles can get trapped in your lungs.  The EPA estimates that radon gas causes 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year.  Radon is a leading environmental cause of cancer.  It is also noted to be the second leading cause of lung cancer, with smoking being number one. 

However, there is a way to make sure that you and your family stay safe from radon exposure – by using our advanced mitigation systems.

Radon can get into homes and buildings through small cracks or holes and build up in the air.  The main entry points into structures can often be traced back to sump pump pits, floor drains that are not draining to a municipality sewage pipe, and crawlspaces.  Well water can also be another source for radon to enter the home, although this is typically not thought to be as prevalent in Central Ohio.

Just like other parts of the world, Ohio has its own levels of radon gas. The EPA has established 3 Zones for expected radon concentrations.  All of Ohio falls under either Zone 1 (where radon levels are expected to be ABOVE 4.0pCi/L) or Zone 2 (where radon levels are expected to be between 2.0pCi/L and 4.0pCi/L).  All of Central Ohio is classified as Zone 1. It is important to test for radon in your home as Ohio has an overall higher average than other parts of the United States.

This is why it is so important to make sure that your family is safe from any potential risks posed by this invisible but dangerous gas.

The most effective method is with an Active Soil Depressurization System.  This is most commonly known as a Radon Mitigation System.  The thought process behind these systems is as follows:

1. Seal the areas where radon is likely to be entering the structure. 
2. A piping system is then installed to the newly sealed areas to allow the radon to vent from the space. 
3. The pipes are then routed to an area that is deemed acceptable for a radon fan to be installed to draw a vacuum.
4. Additional piping is then installed to discharge the radon concentrations to an acceptable location preventing it from re-entering the structure.
